soundware

Making electronic music means that one creates custom patches and presets religiously. At a certain point I decided to make some of my sounds public – at Gumroad.

‘Chromatography’ is the presets pack for Cherry Audio Rhodes Chroma software synthesizer.

Rhodes Chroma was a seminal instrument from early 1980s developed by ARP shortly before their demise. The design was purchased by CBS Musical Instruments and put into production by their Rhodes Division in 1982 – already as the Rhodes Chroma. A keyboardless version was produced as well, called Chroma Expander.

For its time it was an extremely advanced, polyphonic and multitimbral instrument with velocity-sensitive keyboard.

All timbres had been dialled up from scratch.

PHI MU LABS: DRONOLOGY is a set of presets for KORG WAVESTATE hardware synthesizer and KORG WAVESTATE NATIVE plugin.

This library’s primary emphasis are multisamples and programs, as per WAVESTATE’s nomenclature. 16 Performances are available too, but largely for demo purposes.

Each multisample is basically a soundscape on its own, so the majority of programs represent a single multisample each. Intended for use in movie or stage show productions, and with experimental music genres as well.

The demo video showcases several of these timbres with only WAVESTATE NATIVE’s built-in effects.

Metallic groans, clangs, tinklings, jinglings, blips, radio static with something alien coming through, – PHI MU LABS: COLD FOUNDRY is the soundbank for KORG WAVESTATE & WAVESTATE NATIVE assembled specifically for creating the unsettling, dystopian, grim cinematic atmospheres.

It largely consists of field recordings, created since early 2000s, and converted to Wavestate format.

There is also a number of simulated percussive sounds created from filtered noise and with FM-synths, as well as simulated radio static samples in mono and stereo formats.

This is my personal collection of 76 presets for Z3ta 2+.

Some of them have been created from scratch. Some others are heavily modified factory or 3rd party timbres. Since I can’t remember which is which, the pack is free of charge, unless you’d like to drop a tip ;)

Some of my earlier projects relied on this synth heavily. ‘Twas kind of a magic wand for me: when I needed a spacious, morphing textures, Z3ta 2+ did the job.

WT100 pack comprises the wavetables made with Vital synthesizer. The majority of them are resampled field recordings – various hits, bonks, clangs, etc. Creating wavetables from them, however, make it possible to alter these sounds beyond recognition… Or within it.

Vital exports .WAV at 88.2 kHz, so a 44.1kHz version is added as a separate download.

Tested with the following synths (aside from Vital and Surge XT):

  • kv331audio SynthMaster 2.9 (supported)
  • kv331audio SynthMaster One (supported)
  • Full Bucket WhispAir (loadable, not in full)
  • Full Bucket ModulAir (loadable, not in full)
  • Cardinal*/VCV Rack (some wavetable oscillators can load custom files)
  • SocaLabs Wavetable (supported)

u-he Tyrell N6 is one of those synths that make you wonder how comes that it ended freeware. It’s been around for many years now, but only recently u-he has repatriated it back into its own stables, updating its browser, etc.

By now there are 600+ patches shipped with the synth.

Well, here are 48 free patches more. All dialed-up from scratch or from each other, no 3rd party assets used.

PJ-106 is a soundpack of 72 presets created in CHERRY Audio DCO-106 synthesizer. No external effects used except for the mastering plugin (no EQ) on the master bus.

These timbres are mostly recreations of those from the earlier pack for TAL U-NO-LX synth – PJ-6. The initial idea was to set the sliders in the same positions and see what holds. But that just did not work. So the PJ-106 timbres were tweaked or re-dialled to sound more like patches from PJ-6.

It turned out way trickier that expected. Whereas Juno-60 and Juno-106 are reportedly rather similar, U-NO-LX and DCO-106 are drastically different from each other, preventing patches from sounding identical or even similar enough to each other.

For one, DCO-106 lacks U-NO-LX’s polyphonic unison mode, it has only a more traditional monophonic unison. Second, their envelopes seem to be working differently, and so do the LFO’s. Third, TAL’s plugin allows to fire up both Chorus effects at once, which is not possible with DCO-106.

DCO-106 is a great synth, but personally, if I’d have to choose between them two, I’d select U-NO-LX. Its sound clicks with me much more. Besides, it taxes CPU much less.

PJ-6 is a soundpack comprising 64 variable timbres created in TAL U-NO-LX synthesizer. No external effects used except for the mastering plugin (no EQ) on the master bus.

The introductory Lite version is available for free.

The full version is available at Gumroad.

Togu Audio Line U-NO-LX is an outstanding emulation of Roland Juno-6/60 hybrid synths from the first half of 1980s. While the hardware used mostly traditional analog technology, its primary oscillator was digitally-controlled, which ensured tuning stability. A powerful chorus effect onboard also ensured that Juno-6/60 sounded very rich.

Enya, The Cure, Sean Lennon, Faithless, Astral Projection, Vince Clarke, Rabbit in the Moon, Men at Work, Flock of Seagulls, Olive, Dee-Lite, Howard Jones, Locust, Eurythmics and others – this is a very incomplete list of the artists who used (and some keep using) Roland Juno-6* family.

And even more use the emulators – there are quite a few offerings out in the market.

U-No-LX is one of the most fabulous, despite its age.

It also has some additional features like Unison mode with detuning and wideness settings, built-in syncable Delay and Reverb.

All of these patches were created from scratch, except for ARP StormsInDonegal patch which is a recreation of arpeggios from Enya‘s ‘Storms in Africa‘ in which I closely followed Marcus Werker’s settings. Another patch – STR Backport had been recreated after the settings from a factory patch in Cherry Audio’s DCO-106, an emulation of Roland Juno-106. The resulting timbre is still different.

Overall the pack comprises:

  • 8 Arpeggios.
  • 3 Basses.
  • 8 Keys.
  • 6 Leads.
  • 11 Pads.
  • 8 Percussive patches.
  • 6 Strings.
  • 2 Sweeps.
  • 12 Textures.

The Lite version of the pack carries 9 patches selected from every category.
